FAQ

What does multi-positional mean on a packaged unit?

Multi-positional means the packaged unit can be installed in either downflow or horizontal configuration without ordering a different model. On a rooftop curb the supply and return openings face down through the roof deck; on a ground pad the same unit discharges horizontally through the side into wall ducts. The installer sets the configuration on site by moving the duct covers, so one unit serves both kinds of building.

What is the difference between SEER2 and IEER?

SEER2 rates seasonal cooling efficiency for equipment under 65,000 BTU, which is why the 4 and 5 ton units here carry a SEER2 number. IEER, the Integrated Energy Efficiency Ratio, is the commercial standard for larger equipment and weights part-load performance heavily, since a 10 or 20 ton rooftop rarely runs at full output. Higher is better on both, but the two scales are not interchangeable.

How many square feet does a packaged unit cover per ton?

Commercial rules of thumb run 400 to 600 square feet per ton, so a 5 ton unit covers roughly 2,000 to 3,000 square feet and a 20 ton unit 8,000 to 12,000, with restaurants and gyms at the low end. Do these packaged units come with heat?

The units on this page are cooling-only air conditioners that accept an optional electric heat kit for supplemental or primary heat. If the building needs gas heat, Daikin builds gas and electric packaged units in the same capacities, and packaged heat pumps exist as well. Choose the cooling-only cabinet when the building has separate heat, or when electric strip heat covers a mild winter.

Can I replace an existing rooftop unit with a different brand?

Yes, as long as the new unit's footprint and duct openings line up with the existing curb or an adapter curb bridges the difference. Daikin publishes curb dimensions for each capacity, and adapter curbs are available for most common competitor footprints. Confirm the electrical service, gas connection if any, and condensate routing match before ordering, and send us a photo of the existing nameplate so we can check the swap.
