What size electric heat kit do I need?

Size the heat kit to the air handler's capacity and your climate, not to the house alone. As a rule of thumb, 5 kW suits 1.5 to 2 ton systems in mild climates, 8 to 10 kW covers 2 to 3 ton systems, and 15 to 20 kW backs up 3.5 to 5 ton systems where winters are cold. Each air handler lists the maximum kilowatt rating it accepts.

Does a heat pump need an electric heat kit?

A heat pump does not need an electric heat kit to run, but almost every installation needs one. The kit provides supplemental heat when outdoor temperatures drop below what the heat pump can handle, warms the air during defrost cycles so the supply does not blow cold, and acts as emergency heat if the compressor fails. In mild climates a small kit is enough; up north it carries real load.

What is the difference between a heat kit with and without a circuit breaker?

A heat kit with a circuit breaker includes its own overcurrent protection inside the air handler or packaged unit, so a single high-voltage feed serves both the blower and the heater and the breaker isolates the strip for service. A kit without a breaker relies on a properly sized breaker in the electrical panel instead. Local code and the equipment's installation manual decide which one your installation calls for.

How many BTU is a 10 kW heat kit?

A 10 kW heat kit produces about 34,100 BTU per hour, because one kilowatt of electric resistance heat equals roughly 3,412 BTU. By the same math a 5 kW kit gives about 17,000 BTU, 15 kW about 51,150 BTU, and 20 kW about 68,200 BTU. Unlike a gas furnace there is no efficiency loss to subtract; every watt that goes in comes out as heat.

Can I use a Goodman heat kit in an ACiQ air handler?

No, heat kits are brand specific. The slide-in dimensions, terminal block, wiring harness and control board connections are designed around a particular air handler family, so a Goodman kit fits Goodman cabinets and an ACiQ coil fits ACiQ units. Within a brand you also need to match the kit to the air handler series listed on the product page. If you are unsure, send us the air handler model number.
