A failing evaporator coil in an HVAC system rarely announces itself. The system keeps running, the house takes longer to cool, the electricity bill drifts upward, and by the time anyone traces it back to a slow refrigerant leak in the indoor coil the compressor has been working against a fault for a season or two. What does an evaporator coil do?

The evaporator coil absorbs heat from the indoor air. Warm air from the return duct passes across the AC evaporator coil, refrigerant inside takes that heat and carries it outside to the condenser, and cooled air continues into the supply ductwork to cool the air. It also removes humidity to enhance the air conditioning experience.

How can I tell if an evaporator coil is failing?

Watch for cooling that weakens gradually, a system running far longer than it used to, ice forming on the indoor coil or refrigerant line, and rising electricity use. Slow refrigerant leaks produce exactly this pattern and are the most common cause. 

How much does it cost to replace an evaporator coil?
